The result of a four-year collaboration between the Design Trust and Added Value, Five Borough Farm: Seeding the Future of Urban Agriculture proposes more than 30 recommendations to support and expand urban agriculture in New York City, provides the most detailed survey ever produced of urban agriculture in New York City, and establishes the nation's first urban agriculture metrics framework so that farmers and gardeners everywhere can track their activities and demonstrate their impact.

Through maps, photographs, information graphics and interviews with more than 100 stakeholders, Five Borough Farm illustrates how New York City's community-based farms and gardens create jobs, educate youth, capture stormwater, decrease the city's waste stream, and create safe public spaces.

The metrics chapter establishes a framework to understand how the broad range of activities taking place at the city's farms and gardens can contribute to social, health, economic and ecological outcomes. More than forty "indicators" (signs of progress or change) are outlined for farmers and gardeners can track in order to demonstrate the impact of their activities to policymakers, funders and elected officials. 

The policy recommendations build on existing policy documents like PlaNYC and FoodWorks. The recommendations are organized into four main categories: 

1. Formalize government support for urban agriculture
2. Integrate urban agriculture into city policies and plans
3. Identify innovative opportunities to build urban agriculture into the cityscape
4. Address race- and class-based disparities in NYC's urban agriculture community
