Our annual event for the Design Trust Council, "Glass, Concrete, and Soil: Making Space for Urban Agriculture in a Crowded City," featured NYC's urban agriculture experts talking about the future of the movement.

Across rooftops and vacant lots, school yards and public housing projects, urban agriculture is transforming New York City. This movement creates new opportunities for community development, local food production, environmental stewardship, and public health. At the same time, it poses complex land use and policy challenges.

In advance our Five Borough Farm book launch, Battery Park City Parks Conservancy executive director Tessa Huxley will moderate a conversation with three pioneering practitioners to discuss the future of urban agriculture in New York City:

  • Ben Flanner is the president and head farmer of Brooklyn Grange, the largest privately-owned and operated rooftop farm in the country, with sites in Long Island City and a new 45,000 square foot space at the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
  • Ian Marvy is the co-founder and executive director of Added Value and its Red Hook Community Farm. A widely recognized social justic and sustainable food advocate, Mr. Marvy is also our Five Borough Farm project partner.
  • Karen Washington is a long-time food justice activist, president of the New York City Community Garden Coalition, and Co-Founder of La Familia Verde Community Garden Coalition, an organization that has revitalized some of the Bronx's poorest neighborhoods through developing more than five community-operated gardens.
