Happy New Year from the Design Trust for Public Space! Check out our 2024 Public Space Wrapped:

2024 was a critical year for the public space movement. A huge THANK YOU to all who generously contributed to our Year-End Appeal. Your support ensures that we can continue to create equitable community spaces across NYC, and beyond. While we didn’t meet our ambitious $30,000 goal, because of so many generous supporters we did come pretty close.

We are looking forward to another year of designing a more vibrant and inclusive city with you. Please consider kicking-off 2025 by making a tax-deductible gift.

Here’s a look back at some of what we accomplished together in a year:

  • We announced Untaped, a new initiative aimed at removing barriers around community use of public spaces.

  • New York: City Designed kicked off its inaugural year and hosted seven CUNY Macaulay Honors College students at internships across city agencies, non-profits, and private-sector design and architecture firms, preparing the next generation for careers in the planning, design, and preservation fields.

  • With residents, Green Space Connections broke ground on new open spaces at public housing campuses in Brooklyn and the Bronx, while Opening the Edge prepared to start construction at the Lillian Wald Houses in the Lower East  Side.

  • The Neurodiverse City conducted sensory audits and design-imagining workshops at two public space sites with neurodivergent communities to develop public prototypes that showcase more inclusive urban planning practices and support the greatest range of physical and neurological differences.

  • Photo Urbanism Fellow Latricia Morgan unveiled her exhibition at the Bronx Council on the Arts, highlighting power and glamour at NYCHA.

  • We threw Public Space Potlucks with New Yorkers at 60 Wall Street, Smiling Hogshead Ranch, and Socrates Sculpture Park and advocated with public realm coalitions to call on NYC to pass important legislation ensuring NYC stays public for all. And our Benefit for Public Space surpassed our fundraising goal to make all this work possible!

Thank you for following our work and supporting our mission. We have even more in store for 2025...

Welcome to Our 30th Birthday Year!
Stay tuned for another year of transformative public space projects! We have some very exciting announcements in the pipeline, including special anniversary-year events across the city, scaling our work with public housing residents nationally, and announcing our 12th and most ambitious Request for Proposals cycle yet. Stay tuned for the theme drop and how to submit your project idea.
