Public Space Potluck at 590 Atrium

Over 45 public space enthusiasts enjoyed the guerrilla-style art show by Sarah Butler surrounded by tables of communal food items, ranging from sushi and popcorn, to decadent truffles and brownies.

Organized in partnership with the experimental exhibition group CAROUSEL, Butler debuted her photos inspired by her urban environment. The artist’s poetically charged images, which were mechanically projected on a small cardboard stand, feature discarded mattresses encountered in her daily walks between her home and studio in Bushwick. CAROUSEL, founded by Gabriela Salazar and Mary Choueiter, invites artists to create one-night-only exhibitions on a carousel slide projector.

Despite the unlawful resistance from the building security, the night was a success. What a great way to view art!

I wanted to express the collusion between intimate and public spaces. I chose mattresses because they're unremarkable - discarded on the city street they're typically considered an invisible or fleeting presence.
