Craig Covil introduces the new Fulton Center
The behind-the-scenes workings of this engineering marvel was only ours to see on a beautiful spring day. Thanks to the generosity of Arup, HDR, Grimshaw, MTA and Page Ayres Cowley Architects – the amazing team that shaped the new Fulton Center – the Design Trust Council members experienced the every corner of this landmark complex accompanied by expert commentaries.
Later, we convened at nearby Arup headquarters for a networking reception and in-depth discussion about the development of this megaproject.

Here are some interesting anecdotes from the night:
“It was a nightmare before; you never knew what direction you were headed. Everything seems to be in order now at the new Fulton Center, where so many lines, more than Grand Central, go through everyday."
CRAIG COVIL
"We went for a minimal surface treatment for the entire complex to focus attention on the phenomenological beauty of the mirrors. We wanted to add civic value to beauty and create something that public would respect."
PAULO FARIA
"Our challenge was to not only grab light but redirect it into the larger interior area, creating the illusion of a continuous skyscape. After a long research, we found a semi-reflecting material suitable for the job."
