A rendering of the Boogie Down Booth under the 2/5 subway tracks in the Bronx.

Design: Chat Travieso

Join us on Saturday, July 19th for the launch of the Boogie Down Booth, an outdoor music installation underneath the 2/5 subway tracks in the Bronx.

The second site-specific installation for our Under the Elevated project, the Boogie Down Booth was designed by Participatory Design Fellow Chat Travieso to test how the space under the 2/5 subway tracks could be more hospitable for residents and visitors alike. Sited below the Freeman Street subway station, the Booth includes solar-powered LED lights, seating for people waiting for the bus, and directional speakers that pipe Bronx-born music to combat the rumble of the trains above.

Our launch event is part of a day-long program of The Bronx Music Heritage Center celebrating women and percussive traditions in Africa and in New York City. Read more about the full line-up of events for Bronx Rising.

Can't make this event? Don't worry, the booth will be installed through September 15, 2014!

Special thanks to our community collaborators Bronx Music Heritage CenterSouthern Boulevard Merchant Association, WHEDco, and to Situ Fabrication for making this installation possible.
