Fast Company Innovation by Design Awards 2023

For Immediate Release: August 22, 2023

New York, NY June 12, 2023 –  We are excited to announce that Turnout NYC  was honored in Fast Company’s Innovation by Design Awards for 2023 in the social justice category!

The Innovation by Design Awards, which can be found in the September 2023 issue of Fast Company, honor the designers and businesses solving the most crucial problems of today and anticipating the pressing issues of tomorrow. The competition, now in its 12th year, features a range of blue-chip companies, emerging startups, and hungry young talents. It is one of the most sought-after design awards in the industry.

Turnout NYC is creating public space for local arts. Led by the Design Trust for Public Space and SITU, in partnership with cultural community partners from all five boroughs, the project prototyped flexible and semi-permanent outdoor performance spaces with a season of concerts, performances, workshops, and more. The Turnout NYC video series is documenting how our collaborative model can create more equitable arts access in New York City, and beyond.

“Prior to the pandemic, people living in vulnerable areas already had limited access to cultural opportunities. Today, those scarce opportunities are at a higher risk of disappearing,” said Matthew Clarke, Design Trust for Public Space Executive Director. “Building on Design Trust’s experience in activating and transforming underutilized public space throughout the five boroughs, Turnout NYC will create a replicable strategy for place-based interventions that advance equitable access to the arts.”

“This initiative demonstrates how, in being flexible and creative in how we think about traditional performance venues, we can design our public spaces in ways that enrich New York City’s artistic and cultural life, across all neighborhoods,” said Basar Girit, Founding Partner at SITU.

“So much innovation news these days is focused on AI,” said Brendan Vaughan, editor-in-chief of Fast Company. “This year’s Innovation by Design honorees are a reminder that it’s human ingenuity that drives invention."
