Landscape
architect Signe Nielsen and her project
team examined the critically important
blocks on East 125th Street, between Park
Avenue and Lexington Avenues in Manhattan.
These blocks provide surface connection
between buses, a MetroNorth commuter train
station, and the Lexington Avenue IRT 4,
5, and 6 subway stop.

As
a result of their study, the project team
promoted interest in streetscape improvements
that would enhance pedestrian transfer
between these various modes of public transport.
Improving the ease, safety, and atmosphere
of pedestrian transfer would encourage
foot traffic and the use of local transportation
stops, benefiting local business and improving
public safety and quality of life for
area residents. The project team established
interest on the part of community organizations
and local politicians in developing a
constituency to advocate for these streetscape
improvements.
