When designed with innovation and intention, children's play areas can make a valuable contribution to early childhood development, foster youth mental and physical health in the face of rising rates of childhood obesity and inaction, and work to connect urban-raised children with the natural world.

Playgrounds to Playgardens: Designing for Free Play, a publication to be released in 2008, explores the potential of youth play areas that go beyond the traditional playground offerings of swings, slides and see-saws. Building off of the Design Trust’s Designing for Children project (1997), Playgrounds to Playgardens suggests incorporating such innovative play spaces into established community gardens.
