Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and the NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) chairman David S. Yassky have unveiled three finalists in the Taxi of Tomorrow competition to be the new, exclusive New York City taxicab.
Taxi of Tomorrow is the culmination of a four-year partnership between the Design Trust for Public Space and the TLC to make the vehicle design and the vast infrastructure of the taxi system more iconic, energy efficient, and user-friendly. The competition will introduce the first-ever custom-built taxicab specifically designed for New York City, and will allow the public to vote on the features they want to see in the next New York City taxicab.

The Taxi 07 Project
In 2006, TLC approached the Design Trust to help envision and implement the 21st century taxi vehicle and system for New York City. Working with a broad group of stakeholders, from taxi drivers to industrial designers, fleet owners to transportation planners, the Design Trust created design excellence guidelines, a taxi system strategic plan, and a public awareness campaign. These initiatives were all part of Taxi 07 - described in more detail below - and led directly to the TLC's Taxi of Tomorrow initiative.

In celebration of the cab's centennial, Taxi 07 organized a series of public events and educational programs that stimulated debate on how to improve the cab for its next 100 years.
Many of the Taxi 07 programs took place during "NYC Taxi Week" (April 6-15, 2007), including a program about the taxi centennial on the PBS series "New York Voices" on April 13, and a month-long taxi film series at the IFC Center. On April 4th, the Empire State Building was lit in honor of the centennial and Taxi 07. |
