Tenants United for Better Living (TUBL) was the tenant association for the Jose de Diego Beekman Houses in the Mott Haven community of the South Bronx. Residents of the Beekman Houses formed TUBL to combat decades of disinvestment, untenable building conditions and urban decay that have characterized the community in which they live. Facing foreclosure, TUBL worked to become stakeholders and representatives in the management of the Beekman Houses and advocated for affordable living, a secure environment, universal and quality standards, a voice in the day-to-day management issues and design excellence. TUBL played a strong role in the eventual transfer of ownership of the Beekman Houses to the Diego Beekman Mutual Housing Association in 2003. Many of the stakeholders who helped form TUBL currently hold board or staff positions in the tenant-led mutual housing association.
